Firecracker Manufacturing Process

According to Ed Haury of United Fireworks, the production of a making firecrackers involves several key technical stages:
Casing Fabrication: Heavy straw paper or plastic is rolled into tight tubes using specialized machines like the CS-9 tube making machine.
Chemical Mixing: Pyrotechnic compositions, such as flash powder (a mix of oxidizer and metallic fuel) or traditional black powder, are blended in automatic chemical mixers.
Filling and Sealing: Powder is poured into the tubes, which are then sealed at both ends with clay or by crimping the paper inward. Mud filling machines are used for larger industrial batches.
Fuse Insertion: A fuse, typically made of paper-wrapped gunpowder, is inserted into the charge to provide a time-delay ignition.
Finishing: Individual crackers are often braided into "strings" or "rolls" (some as large as 16,000 crackers) and wrapped in colorful labels or cellophane.
Licensing: In the U.S., commercial manufacturing requires an ATF manufacturer's license.
Green Technology: The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed "green crackers" that use cleaner raw materials to reduce dust and emissions by 30%.
